How to Save on the Road

How to Save Money on Your Next Road Trip

There is nothing quite like hitting the open road with the windows down, the wind whipping through your hair and the radio playing your favorite jams. However, these road trips can get expensive very quickly, especially if you are traveling far away. However, if you plan ahead, you can cut a lot of these costs down, making the adventure more fun and wallet-friendly. We have compiled a list of great tips to make your summer road trips the best yet so keep reading!

Plan Ahead
Before you set out on your adventures you want to plan ahead to avoid any costly mistakes. Do a little research on the routes you will be taking and the destination you are heading to. Mark down all the cool spots to stop along the way like popular places to eat or roadside landmarks. You should also pre-book your over-night accommodations to avoid getting there and the no vacancy sign is blinking! Just in case, bring a map along with you in case your navigation goes down or your smartphone dies.

Save on Gas
We spend a lot of money at the pump, especially when on a long haul road trip. There are ways to cut down how much you are spending on gas. There is a really great app called CheapGas that helps you navigate to where the most inexpensive gas options are available along your route. Other ways to save on gas include driving at the speed limit. Driving at or around 65 miles per hour ensures that your vehicle operates with the highest efficiency. If your vehicle has cruise control, take advantage of it to stay on track. Avoid taking the local roads and traveling during peak times so you don't get stuck in stop-and-go traffic. You should also check your tire pressure before you head out as tires low on air can affect your fuel economy.

Toll Transponders
If you are going to be traveling through a lot of tolls, its a great idea to get set up with a toll transponder. These transponders link up to your credit card or bank account and automatically deduct the charge when you go through the toll. In addition to making the toll process easier, it can also make it cheaper! Delaware offers the EZPass toll transponder which offers a discount on the toll price.

Get a Tune-Up
Take your vehicle in for a tune-up to make sure you are running in tip-top shape before your trip. This is a great time to ask the service department to look over your entire vehicle and if any issues arise, get them fixed before you head out. You don't want to be far away from home, broken down on the side of the road in need of vehicle repairs that can cost a lot of money you didn't budget for.

Save on Dining Out
Eating out can seem super fun but it can add up quickly, potentially derailing the trip because of the cost. There are some easy ways to make sure you are not eating out every single meal on the road. Pack your own snacks and meals before you leave. Bring a cooler along with you for the ride, stocking it with ice, to keeps things cool, and things like water, fruit, veggies, and sandwiches. This will save you more than just money, it can also save you time because you have to stop less!

Before you head out on your road trip make an appointment with our service department and speak with an adviser to ensure your vehicle is ready for the trip!
